PayPal Merchant Referral Bonus Program Will Be Discontinued

It is a sad day to many E-commerce solution providers. For years, we have relied on PayPal’s Merchant Referral Bonus Program for additional source of income. Even though not much, but it is comforting to know we are rewarded and appreciated by PayPal for referring new customers to them. However, all this will end on 15 August 2012. PayPal decided to discontinue its Merchant Referral Bonus Program. We received this sad news in our mailbox today…

Thank you for your participation in PayPal’s Merchant Referral Bonus Program. The program will be discontinued on August 15, 2012.

Effective on August 15, 2012:

  • New referrals will no longer be tracked
  • Bonus accrual payments will be stopped

Your PayPal account will not in any way be impacted by the discontinuation of this program.

Any final accrued bonus balance from your referrals through August 15, 2012 will be paid to your PayPal account in accordance with the standard 30 day payout cycle.

All links you have created will still work and will redirect to a PayPal sign up page. However, referrals will not be tracked or accumulate toward this bonus program.

For further assistance, please go to our PayPal.com website and click the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of any PayPal page.

Sincerely,

PayPal

PayPal has grown bounds and leaps over the years, reaching its arm to countries that were previously frowned upon including Malaysia as the security of credit cards improved. Gone were the days where we need to open up a US bank account to use its service where such knowledge is only limited to a small group of so called “Internet Guru”. Now all Malaysians can open up a PayPal account as easy as sign up for a Gmail account. We also have numerous options to top up our PayPal account including direct transfer from RHB bank. Withdrawing money from your PayPal account to your own local banks is also very convenient and it is done in Ringgit Malaysia (MYR). That means, no more losing money in currency conversion.

I guess that is why PayPal does not need our “help” to promote its services anymore. Maybe they have reached such a celebrity status that needs no introduction anymore. Whatever it is, we respect its decision and we will say goodbye to our steady flow of monthly spare change with a heavy heart.
